Rubber comes in various types categorized by oil resistance as polar (oil-resistant) and non-polar (non-oil-resistant) rubber. How does the oil resistance of different rubber sealing components vary?
1. Fuel Resistance: FKM fluoro rubber and FMVQ fluorosilicone rubber exhibit good resistance to fuel oil. Chloroprene rubber and chlorinated polyethylene rubber (CPE) have the poorest fuel resistance. The fuel resistance of NBR nitrile rubber sealing components improves with increasing acrylic content, while chlorosulfonated polyethylene rubber outperforms nitrile rubber.
2. Mixed Fuel Resistance: FMVQ fluorosilicone rubber and FKM fluoro rubber show good resistance to mixed fuel oil. Acrylic rubber has the lowest resistance, with NBR rubber's resistance improving with higher acrylic content. High-fluorine content fluoro rubber demonstrates better stability with mixed fuel oil.
3. Mineral Oil Resistance: NBR nitrile rubber is commonly used for mineral oil resistance, with its resistance improving with higher acrylic content. However, high acrylic content nitrile rubber has limited heat resistance. For temperatures reaching 150 degrees, hydrogenated nitrile rubber, FKM fluoro rubber, FMVQ fluorosilicone rubber, and acrylic rubber are recommended. Among these, FKM and FMVQ are most effective at 150 degrees. To reduce costs, blending acrylic rubber into FKM by less than 50% with a decrease in vulcanized rubber performance not exceeding 20% is feasible.
4. Acidic Oxidative Fuel Resistance: Acidic oxidative fuels can degrade vulcanized rubber performance. Nitrile rubber and chlorosulfonated rubber are inadequate for long-term use in acidic oxidative fuels. Only fluoroelastomers like FKM, FMVQ, fluorophosphazene, and hydrogenated nitrile rubber perform well. Ordinary nitrile rubber cannot withstand acidic gasoline at 125 degrees. Using low sulfur-activated cadmium oxide and white carbon black in nitrile rubber with increased acrylic content can improve resistance to acidic gasoline.
